Heidelberg & Amsterdam, September 13, 2013 - NEC Laboratories Europe introduces two innovative technologies, NEC Media Cloud solution and NEC Smart AppStore, at the International Broadcasting Convention 2013 in Amsterdam, demonstrating how today’s Smart-TV can be further enhanced with Cloud technologies and a Smart AppStore. These
technologies pave the way for commercialization of large scale cloud-based media services and secure, convenient and user-tailored TV applications.
The demonstrated technologies have been developed by NEC Laboratories Europe as part of the European Research Project HBB-NEXT. Together with other HBB-NEXT project partners, NEC Laboratories Europe will showcase these technologies to bring Hybrid Broadcast Broadband Television (HbbTV) to its next-generation and have impact on the
standards of HBBTV 2.0. The demonstration will take place at Hall 8, Stand F40 of the International Broadcasting Convention 2013 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from September 13 – 17.
Based on the OpenStack cloud infrastructure, the NEC Media Cloud solution provides flexible and attractive media services for TV and Internet. They will be delivered to heterogeneous end devices like Smart-TVs, set top boxes, tablets, or Smartphones. Enddevices can easily offload media processing to the Cloud. By using the flexibility of the Cloud, operators and broadcaster can fast introduce new media services to any kind of media devices. The Media Cloud platform automatically optimizes the Cloud processing to deliver TV services and elastically deal with sudden demand peaks triggered by TV broadcasting events. NEC Laboratories Europe developed advanced automatic Cloud management
algorithms, optimized the resource allocation in the Cloud, and included data locality-aware scheduling algorithms which improve self-organization and reduces the cost of the Media Cloud-based services.
NEC Smart AppStore is based on sophisticated reputation and trust technologies for improving the personalization of TV recommendations. User identification is based on voice and face recognition technologies. As those feedbacks coming from users with similar preferences receive priorities, users browsing the HBB-TV AppStore can expect recommendations much better fitting their personal preferences compared to today’s systems.
To this end, NEC is utilizing novel algorithms for user-tailored reputation scores offering personalized experiences to users.
As the enablers of the HBB-NEXT eco-system, the technologies behind NEC media cloud and Smart AppStore can be widely utilized in various areas, such as Cloud-based TV, multiscreen based Smart Home, digital signage and online education.
