Milano Serravalle – Milano Tangenziali S.p.A. and NEC Italia S.p.A. Together to innovate traffic monitoring with NEC Fiber Optic Smart Sensing (FOSS) technology

Milan, 17th September: Milano Serravalle – Milano Tangenziali S.p.A. and NEC Italia S.p.A. a cutting-edge multinational company in the IT and electronics sector, have started a strategic partnership to introduce a new technology developed in Japan and presented during the ITS World Congress.

The NEC Fiber Optic Smart Sensing (FOSS) solution represents an innovation in the field of Smart Cities, taking advantage of the optical fiber already installed along the network for continuous traffic monitoring. Optical fibres, sensitive to variations in pressure, vibrations and deformations, are able to precisely detect changes in the surrounding environment, caused by the passage of vehicles, which alter the propagation of light through the fibre. The signals detected via a sophisticated central IoT device are transformed into digital data and sent to a processing system based on an highly sophisticated algorithm, developed by NEC R&D Division, that detects the transit of vehicles, measuring its speed, the accelerations and the decelerations, allowing operators to have an overview of the situation both in real time and with historical reports.

Unlike traditional sensors, such as radars and cameras, which are installed at specific points and can only monitor the surrounding areas, with high costs for infrastructure and connection, FOSS allows complete monitoring, kilometer after kilometer by leveraging the infrastructure existing and with minimal management costs.

The objective is to implement a system that efficiently integrates the traffic data detected by traditional sensors with that acquired by FOSS, in order to improve traffic analysis and management of events along the route, allowing information users, more promptly, in the event of slowdowns or accidents, up to a predictive analysis of the data to proactively address critical issues.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with NEC to introduce this innovative FOSS technology on our routes,” declared Marco Colloredo, Operations Director of Milano Serravalle – Milano Tangenziali S.p.A, “This partnership represents a significant step towards increasingly efficient, predictive and sustainable."

“This project marks an important milestone for our technology, demonstrating to the operators of the infrastructure and SMART CITIES that the union between IoT and AI can give a huge boost towards higher quality services for users, at highly competitive cost"  declared Andrea Bellaccomo COO of NEC Italia S.p.A.

“In a future prospective, let's imagine an wider usage of these technologies to make our cities safer, making the conservation of roads more efficient, collecting useful information for management, not only real time but also with prediction on traffic behaviours. This technology will create a significant step ahead for the existing fiber optic networks, enabling new business models".

Milan Serravalle - Milan Tangenziali SpA is the concessionaire of the A7 motorway, from Milan to Serravalle Scrivia, of the three Milanese ring roads - A50 West ring road, A51 East ring road, A52 North ring road - of the West ring road of Pavia (A54) and of the Bereguardo-Pavia motorway junction (A53). The network, which extends for 187 km, is therefore at the center of one of the main European motorway networks.
