NEC Laboratories Europe (NLE) has for many years been active in promoting worldwide standardization in many different leading Standard Development Organizations (SDOs). NLE researchers actively participate in these organizations to promote advances in the industry, not only by making contributions but also by serving in leadership positions, e.g. in 3GPP, BBF, OMA, IETF, ONF, oneM2M and various groups in ETSI.

3GPP: The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a collaboration agreement that was established in December 1998. 3GPP is responsible for standardizing mobile telecommunication networks based on a variety of Radio technologies (GSM, UTRA FDD and TDD, LTE) and their evolutions. NLE has a long and active history in 3GPP participating in RAN and SA work, focusing on system aspects, services and requirements, LTE SAE architecture, IMS architecture, security issues, network management and the future 5G architecture.

BBF: The Broadband Forum (BBF) defines multi-service broadband packet networking specifications addressing interoperability, architecture and management for broadband wireline solutions and converged packet networks. BBF work enables home, business and converged broadband services, encompassing customer, access and backbone networks. NLE actively participates in BBF in the area of broadband network architectures, including home networking, mobile backhaul, virtual home gateways, SDN&NFV as well as device management for M2M.

ETSI: The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) produces globally-applicable standards for Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), including fixed, mobile, radio, converged, broadcast and internet technologies and is officially recognized by the European Commission as one of the three European Standards Organizations. NLE contributes to many Technical Committees and groups. Over the years this has included contributions and chairmanship positions in TISPAN, ITS, M2M (now SmartM2M), ATTM, BRAN, ISG INS, ISG NFV, ISG MEC, etc. NLE is also one of the founding members of ISG mWT (millimetre Wave Transmission).

IETF: The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is a large open international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution of the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet. there is a wide participation from industry and academia. The IETF defines the de-facto standards for the Internet. The goal of the IETF is to develop one common network layer standard. NLE has actively participated since 1998, including at times providing Area Directors and working group chairmen, with a focus on Internet management, signaling and control.

oneM2M: The oneM2M Partnership Project is a collaboration agreement that was established in July 2012 to develop technical specifications which address the need for a common M2M (machine-to-machine) Service Layer. Important requirements are that it can readily be embedded within various hardware and software, and can be relied upon to connect the myriad of devices in the field with M2M application servers worldwide. A critical objective of oneM2M is to attract and actively involve organizations from M2M-related business domains such as: telematics and intelligent transportation, healthcare, utilities, industrial automation, smart homes, etc. NLE helped set up this project and is actively involved in the requirements, architecture, abstraction and semantics work.

ONF: The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) is a user-driven organization dedicated to the promotion and adoption of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) through development of open standards. ONFs key accomplishment to date is the introduction of the OpenFlow™ Standard, which enables remote programming of the forwarding plane. The OpenFlow Standard is the first SDN standard and a vital element of an open software-defined network architecture. ONFs Technical Communities continue to analyze SDN requirements and evolve the OpenFlow and related technical standards. The SDN Architecture describes the framework, interfaces and methodologies for SDNs. ONF OpenFlow Conformance Certification provides a way for networking vendors to demonstrate compliance with the OpenFlow Standard. NLE has been involved in ONF since its creation in 2011.
