NEC Laboratories Europe Lead Demonstration Cases in European Union Cyber Security Initiative

Heidelberg, Germany, 26th March, 2019 – With its long-standing experience in major European projects, NEC Laboratories Europe will be in charge of demonstration cases of the CyberSec4Europe initiative, announced on 26th February 2019 by the European Commission.

CyberSec4Europe is an EU pilot for a pan-European cybersecurity competence network that will test and demonstrate potential secure governance structures. CyberSec4Europe will address key EU directives and regulations, such as the GDPR, PSD2, eIDAS, and ePrivacy, and help to implement the EU Cybersecurity Act and to secure the digital economy, infrastructures, society, and democracy.

To achieve this, CyberSec4Europe will bring together Europe’s leading research centers working on cutting-edge security technologies including Blockchain and Trusted Execution Environments. CyberSec4Europe will demonstrate the application of these technologies with a set of demonstration cases of cyber security solutions in finance, smart cities, healthcare and transport. CyberSec4Europe brings together 43 participants from 22 EU member states and associated countries.

NEC leads the CyberSec4Europe work demonstration cases and contributes its leading Blockchain and platform security technologies. Dr. Jürgen Quittek, Managing Director of NEC Laboratories Europe commented, “NEC has conducted research on Blockchain and platform security for many years. These key technologies for future cybersecurity solutions are now mature and ready to be used to improve security of the digital society.”

Alessandro Sforzin, Research Scientist at NEC and leader of the CyberSEc4Europe demonstration cases highlighted the importance of the work for ensuring Europe stays at the forefront of security research: “CyberSec4Europe represents a great opportunity for the European Union to provide both its citizens and its industries with innovative secure technologies that protect users’ privacy. Blockchain and Trusted Execution Environments are very promising technologies for enhancing the security of many verticals. NEC will leverage its huge experience in those technologies to assist in the design of secure use-cases for finance, healthcare, and transport.”

The CyberSec4Europe project CyberSec4Europe brings together 43 participants from 22 EU member states and associated countries. The volume of funding by the European Union is about 16 Million Euro for 3.5 years. For further details, please visit: https://www.cybersec4europe.eu/
