London & Heidelberg, October 05, 2015 - NEC Laboratories Europe will demonstrate its new Bus Optimization Solution at the 22nd ITS World Congress and Exhibition taking place in Bordeaux at the Convention Centre and the Parc des Expositions from 05-09 October 2015.
While the world’s urban population is on the rise, increasing the number of public transport journeys and offloading congested roads is a key priority for many urban transport authorities. NEC’s prototype “REFLEX” is a bus optimization solution that improves the performance of bus routes in terms of scheduling and regularity in near real-time by analyzing several factors and presenting new options to improve efficiency and passenger satisfaction.
“Bus companies are always trying to reduce their excess waiting time (EWT), but it is tricky to do. Often they lack insights into why and how bus bunching occurs, which results in lower regularity,” said Roberto Baldessari, Deputy General Manager, Social Solutions Research Division at NEC Laboratories Europe. “Knowing the location, route and speed of multiple buses, as well as external data, including weather and traffic conditions, and then working with all that data to provide a solution is a difficult job, but one we can solve with our technology.”
NEC’s REFLEX technology enables both the offline optimization of schedules as well as the real-time deployment of holding and speed reduction strategies by analyzing the bus location, the load information as well as the external data. The REFLEX bus headway balancer is based on a stochastic search and branch hopping/merging algorithm, which makes it possible to identify the top performing candidate schedule and to make adjustments within a limited amount of time.
The Bus Optimization Solution is part of NEC’s wider Transit Management System (TMS) portfolio, that also includes automatic fare collection systems, passenger information and bus stop announcement systems.
