NEC Telecom MODUS, Ltd (NTML) is involved in numerous areas which drive the development of the wireless telecommunications standards for future technologies, alongside the development of infrastructure for today.

NTML actively participates in the 3GPP standardisation process, submitting proposals for the future enhancements of the global telecommunications system. This includes continual rounds of idea generation, algorithm definition and patent applications to keep NEC’s standards essential patent portfolio competitive.

Once standardised features have been defined, they are used by NTML’s hardware and software engineers to prototype products for NEC’s markets. These include base-station equipment for both the Japanese domestic and global market products along with an increasingly popular Open RAN (O-RAN) compliant plug and play products. Many of the prototypes are based on FPGAs and DSP chipsets, and, in some cases, ASICs.

Not all parts of the system are covered by the standards. NTML’s algorithm developers design differentiating features as scheduler algorithms, receiver algorithms and beamforming methodologies. The performance of such algorithms is verified via simulation.

At a higher level NTML carries out feasibility research, technical analysis and systems design for call processing features within the Radio Access Network (RAN), as well as innovative solutions to realise NEC’s future commercial RAN solutions and products, such as self-organising networks (SON) and intelligent RAN control using machine learning/AI.
